Joseph D. Kanive

Joseph D. Kanive, 66, of Orono, MN and formerly of Washington, IL, died on Sunday, December 1, 2013 in Saint Louis Park, MN. Born on January 10, 1947 in Peoria, IL, to O. Dale and Lucille Meyer Kanive, he married Louise Kay Nelson on December 20, 1969 in Lacon, IL. She survives. Also surviving are 3 sons, Jay (Alyssa) Kanive of Orono, MN Ryan (Becky) Kanive of Long Lake, MN and John (Sara) Kanive of Highland Park, IL, and four grandchildren, Jack, Kate, Brenner, and Kailey Kanive and 1 brother, John (Shearyl) Kanive of Lacon, IL. He was preceded in death by 1 sister, Judy Powell. Joe grew up in Lacon, IL where he became very involved with the Boy Scouts of America, eventually becoming an Eagle Scout. Joe attended Mid-County High School where he met and eventually married his wife of 44 years, Louise. Joe served as a platoon Sergeant for the Army during the Vietnam War, receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service. After being discharged from the Army Joe and Louise moved to Washington, IL in 1970. He attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL where he earned a degree in finance. Upon graduation from Bradley Joe began his career as a stockbroker in Peoria, IL in 1973 and despite numerous company name changes Joe remained in the same office until his retirement in 2010. Joe was an avid Bradley Basketball fan and season ticketholder who enjoyed taking Louise and his sons to home games. Joe also enjoyed hunting and the outdoors, especially fishing and boating at the family’s cabin in Crane Lake, MN. Joe was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police and Saint Patrick Church in Washington, IL as well as a member of the Creve Coeur Club in Peoria, IL and the NRA. A funeral mass will be at 11 am on Friday, December 6, 2013 at St. Patrick Church in Washington. Msgr. Charles Beebe will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. A committal service and military honors will be accorded at Meadow Valley Center, 2075 Washington Rd., Washington following the mass. Cremation rites will then be accorded.
