Harold B. West II

Harold B. West II, 92, of Washington, passed away peacefully at Washington Christian Village on Sunday, November 1, 2015. Harold was born May 23, 1923 in Peoria, IL to Harold B. and Ella E. McGuire West. He married Virginia “Gin” B. Bolliger on October 2, 1942 at Glen Oak Christian Church in Peoria. She preceded him in death on February 12, 2010. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joey Kelly; and sister, Joan Colwell. Surviving are three children, Harold B. West III of Carlton, KY, Arlen C. West of Punta Gorda, FL, Jeannine (Dick) Davenport of Parrish, FL; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ron (Jettie) Kelly, Rick (Cheryll) Kelly; two sisters, Donna Barkley, Mary (Bob) Lonteen; special caregiver, Diana Kupfer; and several nieces and nephews. Harold B. West II was a community philanthropist. His kindness, generosity, and concern for the welfare of others was his “heart”. He had vision, dreamt big, and viewed risks and problems as opportunities for growth. The annual Washington Cherry Festival was one of his visionary accomplishments to promote the community. Locally, Harold owned and operated West’s Meats, Lockers & Catering that provided employment opportunities for Washington youth. Mr. West always encouraged young people to get an education, work hard, and to be the best at whatever they chose. After his retirement, Harold enjoyed working at Michael’s Italian Feast Restaurant in Washington, owned by Mike & Veronica Axelson. The respect and admiration grew between them throughout the years. In 2011, Harold West humbly and proudly accepted the Washingtonian Award, which is given to role models in the city who make a vast impact on their community and neighbors. In addition Harold had served as president and board member of the IAMP (Illinois Association of Meat Processors). Harold’s devotion, commitment and love for his family was most important to him. He was a loving, caring and supportive husband to his wife Ginny. They belonged to many dance clubs, and this couple graced the floor with their dancing talents. A nurturing father and grandpa to his children and grandchildren, Harold enjoyed sharing his gift of storytelling and recalling Peoria’s history. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington, or Hands of Love Ministry in Germantown Hills. A memorial service will be at 11 am Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Cremation rites have been accorded.
