James D. Kunz

James D. Kunz, 82, of East Peoria, Illinois passed away at 2:51 pm on March 8, 2017 at Unity Point Methodist Hospital, Peoria, Illinois. Born May 4, 1934, in Schram City, Illinois to Lewy W. and Mary M. Kunz. He married Carol Johnston on September 7, 1956, in Peoria, Illinois at the First United Methodist Church, with W. Harold Lloyd presiding. Carol survives and two sons: James. F (Jean) Kunz of Albuquerque, New Mexico and David E. (Maura) Kunz of University Park, Maryland and a granddaughter, Lindsay, of New York City and a grandson, Aaron (Bethany) of Colorado Springs, Colorado. His brother, William F. Kunz, preceded him in death. Jim was a certified public accountant since 1969. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Bradley University and he was a member of the Illinois Certified Public Accountants Society, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Institute of Management Accountants, the latter where he served as an officer and director. Jim also served with the U.S. Army Reserves (artillery) from 1956 to 1963, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was honorably discharged on April 26, 1963. He taught in public schools in East Peoria and Peoria from 1958 to 1967 and was assistant principal of a K-8 school in East Peoria. He served on the boards of directors of Waugh Foods, Inc. and Burklund Distributors, Inc. for many years. Jim was a Boy Scout leader for over 40 years, serving as packmaster, scoutmaster, explorer adviser, committee member and chairman and participated in the Order of the Arrow (Brotherhood) and Woodbadge, and he believed Scouting is the best of all youth activities. He was currently serving on the Finance Committee of the W.D. Boyce Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Peoria. He was an active member for many years of the East Peoria Community High School Class of 1952 Reunion Committee and was currently serving as Chairman of the 65th Reunion Committee. A funeral service for Jim will be held at noon, Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in East Peoria. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria. Memorial contributions may be made to the W.D.
