Eleanor D. Hallinan

Eleanor D. Hallinan, 96, of Washington, passed away at 5:50 pm Thursday, July 6, 2017 at the Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka. She was born June 11, 1921 in Philadelphia, PA to Joseph G. and Mary Ahern Denny Jr. She married John C. Hallinan Sr. in Wayne, PA on July 7, 1945. He preceded her in death on August 7, 2004. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Claire and Ann; two grandsons, Charles Goldbroch and John Brendan Primm; two sisters, Virginia Denny and Marjorie Kalish; two brothers, Joseph Denny III and Donald Denny; and three son-in-laws, Bernie Goldbroch, Dave Jones and Jack Kennedy. Surviving are ten children, Mary Kennedy, Kathleen Hallinan, Joan Hallinan, John (Joyce Tikalsky) Hallinan, Pat (John Primm) Hallinan, Mark Hallinan, Mike (Anne) Hallinan, Joseph Hallinan, William Hallinan and Theresa Jones; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Eleanor graduated from Rosemont College, PA receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in 1943; later attending Graduate School at Drexel University for Civil Engineering. Besides raising 12 children Eleanor was a community activist spending 12 years on Washington’s City Council serving as an Alderman, and was a 50 year member and Past President of the Town & Country Gardener’s. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and Parish Council, serving on several diocesan commissions. She was a feminist and backed the ERA vocally and in print. She kept abreast of current events up till the day she died. After having a stroke recently they did the usual cognitive tests. What's your birthday, what day is today etc. When she was asked if she knew who the current president is she answered, "Unfortunately, yes." She was an occasional French chef and served us dishes most mid-westerners had never heard about. Memorial donations may be made to the Sister Mary Ann or Fr. Schubert Fund at St Patrick Catholic Church, or to a charity of donor’s choice. A funeral mass for Eleanor will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, July 13, 2017 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington with Fr. Julius Turyatoranwa officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 pm Wednesday at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington, with further visitation 30 minutes prior to mass on Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery in Washington.
